Infrastructure

Costless Switching and “New Commerce”

Overview

These slides were shown as part of a presentation given to a meeting of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, held at the MIT Media Lab and introduced by Nicholas Negroponte, in December 1994. The purpose of the conference was “to define for graphic designers the scope and breadth of the digital domain.”

I was asked by conference organizers to contribute a perspective on “infrastructure”, which to me included the evolution of the corporation, and the effect that that is having on both the nature of business and the relationships between designers and corporations. These views were developed in collaboration with Du Pont and which I distilled to their essence for this audience. The preceding, more-detailed (and less-polished) version of the work is also available as a presentation here.
