Would you ever talk to me again? I doubt it. But notice: I just described Google. Yup. that’s how search engines treat us. We can’t ask them\u00a0why<\/em>\u00a0Luigi’s Pizza is ranked at the top.<\/p>\n Of course, every search engine\u00a0wants to protect its proprietary heuristic for ranking its search results. But is that a good enough reason for being completely opaque? Could it at least tell you some things\u2014like, Luigi’s\u00a0wins awards for pizza? Or, it’s not far from where you are? Or maybe even, it serves the kind of pizza that I know you like?<\/p>\n Would you trust\u00a0a person who was never transparent? Should we be\u00a0worried that\u00a0a search engine wants to promote results that make it money?\u00a0(That’s not unheard of.) Why do we trust our computers more willingly than other human beings?<\/p>\n The Parable of Luigi’s Pizza gets to the heart of\u00a0relationships<\/em>\u2014if you can have an open conversation<\/em>, you may build your confidence in the connection and perhaps build\u00a0trust<\/em>.<\/p>\n Which\u00a0gets to the heart of helping someone\u00a0make good decisions<\/em>\u2014exploring\u00a0options, evaluating trade-offs, considering personal preferences. If you’re relying on someone\u2014or a search engine or an AI bot<\/a>\u2014to help you decide, you need a\u00a0conversation<\/em> about all that.
