{"id":3312,"date":"2019-04-04T20:30:56","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T00:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pangaro.com\/designconversation\/?p=3312"},"modified":"2021-01-18T18:59:40","modified_gmt":"2021-01-18T23:59:40","slug":"i-want-a-turning-test-for-conversation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pangaro.com\/designconversation\/2019\/04\/i-want-a-turning-test-for-conversation\/","title":{"rendered":"I Want a &#8220;Turning Test for Conversation&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><small>(Diagram after <a href=\"http:\/\/dubberly.com\">Dubberly Design Office<\/a>)<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not \u00a0a typo \u2014 A <strong>Turning Test.<\/strong>\u00a0For<strong> Conversation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We all know the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turing_test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Turing Test for Intelligence<\/a> \u2014 when a human will judge if a machine is &#8220;intelligent.&#8221; I want <strong>a machine that will judge if a conversation is &#8220;intelligent.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s right, &#8220;intelligent&#8221; \u2014 the quotes mean it&#8217;s ambiguous and we ought to discuss it. The meaning of &#8220;intelligent&#8221; \u00a0is subject to opinion and personal values. For me, intelligent conversations are forward-moving, collaborative, generative \u2014 they <strong>go to new and interesting places<\/strong>. And for you?<\/p>\n<p>I like this proposal for a Turning Test because:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s a constructive thought experiment.<\/strong> I want to\u00a0provoke conversation about what it takes to have an intelligent conversation \u2014 What are the elements? How does it move and flow? When does it generate new ideas and value? Why does it keep us engaged? And how can we improve our conversations \u2014 can we <a href=\"http:\/\/pangaro.com\/designconversation\/2015\/12\/design-is-conversation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">design for better conversations<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s a vision for a new service.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0I want to build such\u00a0a machine \u2014 to write <a href=\"http:\/\/pangaro.com\/designconversation\/2019\/03\/computing-conversation-a-lecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conversational heuristics<\/a>, and see others write them, to evaluate the qualities and benefits of a given conversation.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Then we might input the deluge of all possible conversations and get help in identifying the good ones. How about on social media feeds, just for a start. And on commenting threads and on Slack and on long email threads and political debates \u2014\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">anywhere that\u00a0<\/span>conversation<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0is open for review and evaluation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><strong>Because the more we have conversational agents and chatbots, the more we need a Turning Test<\/strong>. And maybe we would steer our own conversations to be better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">CUIs (conversational user interfaces) and VUIs (voice user interfaces), are all the rage today. Companies and techies are trying to put them anywhere. A lot of people are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recode.net\/2018\/11\/12\/17765390\/voice-alexa-siri-assistant-amazon-echo-google-assistant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;talking&#8221; to\u00a0their devices<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u2014 they are &#8220;taking turns&#8221;, terminology that comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linguisticsociety.org\/resource\/discourse-analysis-what-speakers-do-conversation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scholarly work<\/a>. For example,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Me: &#8220;Would you like to talk about having great conversations?&#8221; You: &#8220;Sure, as long as it goes somewhere interesting!&#8221; That&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">why<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0I&#8217;m calling it\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Turning Test<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>By the way, do you know the etymology of &#8220;conversation&#8221;?
