{"id":3531,"date":"2020-02-17T10:29:17","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T15:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pangaro.com\/designconversation\/?p=3531"},"modified":"2021-01-18T18:59:40","modified_gmt":"2021-01-18T23:59:40","slug":"colloquy-arrives-to-centre-pompidou-progress-update-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pangaro.com\/designconversation\/2020\/02\/colloquy-arrives-to-centre-pompidou-progress-update-13\/","title":{"rendered":"Colloquy Arrives to Centre Pompidou \u2014 Progress Update #13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Image above: TJ McLeish calibrating light and sound in the gallery at Centre Pompidou for the public exhibition opening February 26, 2020.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here at Centre Pompidou for the installation of Colloquy of Mobiles (<a href=\"http:\/\/colloquyofmobiles.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its 2018 replica<\/a>) to be displayed as part of a large-scale exhibition, with a conjoined history of brains, neural nets, AI, and cybernetic artifacts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.centrepompidou.fr\/cpv\/agenda\/event.action?param.id=FR_R-f146fa16402582d562607c9d2cbeee3e&amp;param.idSource=FR_E-f146fa16402582d562607c9d2cbeee3e#ie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The exhibition<\/a> entitled MUTATIONS \/ CR\u00c9ATIONS 4: NEURONES \/ LES INTELLIGENCES SIMUL\u00c9ES is perhaps the largest retrospective connecting to cybernetics and art since <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ica.art\/whats-on\/cybernetic-serendipity-documentation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cybernetic Serendipity<\/a> in London in 1968, where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medienkunstnetz.de\/works\/colloquy-of-mobiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordon Pask&#8217;s original Colloquy<\/a> was shown.<\/p>\n<p>Connected to the exhibition is a 2-day symposium, including a panel named &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/vertigo.ircam.fr\/agenda\/impasses-et-devenir-de-la-cybernetique\/detail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dead Ends and the Future of Cybernetics<\/a>&#8221; where <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andrew_Pickering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andy Pickering<\/a> (author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cybernetic-Brain-Sketches-Another-Future\/dp\/0226667901\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Cybernetic Brain<\/em>)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/zkm.de\/en\/person\/margit-rosen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Margit Rosen of ZKM (<\/a>a great and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/ds385mdy5p63vcy\/Margit%20Rosen%20in%20Practicable%20on%20COLLOQUY-r.pdf?dl=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">long-time advocate for Colloquy<\/a>), and I are joined by two French philosophers.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">I have discerned that English title of our panel comes straight from Google Translated out of the original French, &#8220;Impasses et devenir de la cybern\u00e9tique.&#8221; (The site apparently uses Google to translate all their English texts.) While &#8220;the future of cybernetics&#8221; in the panel&#8217;s title is unambiguous in either language, Google&#8217;s choice to translate &#8220;impasses&#8221; as &#8220;dead ends&#8221; is dubious. (I say this as a cybernetician.)
