{"id":616,"date":"2015-10-08T15:30:58","date_gmt":"2015-10-08T19:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ccsmfa.wordpress.com\/?p=616"},"modified":"2021-01-18T18:59:43","modified_gmt":"2021-01-18T23:59:43","slug":"ethics-and-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pangaro.com\/designconversation\/2015\/10\/ethics-and-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethics and Design?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was struck by the depth of reaction to mentions of ethics and design at recent presentations at Carnegie Mellon and an <a href=\"http:\/\/2015.midwestuxconference.com\/program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IxD conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In all four situations, overwhelmingly the group Q&amp;A as well as 1-on-1 follow-up discussions after my talks resonated with the responsibility of designers in navigating between &#8220;controlling choices&#8221; of users vs. &#8220;enabling bad choices\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>How do we help design students understand their responsibility? What historical concepts and values ought we to offer for this &#8220;age of tech\u201d? Could there be a design elective on \u201cEthics and Design\u201d?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This recent NYTimes piece speaks to\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/06\/opinion\/david-brooks-the-big-university.html?action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;module=opinion-c-col-left-region&amp;region=opinion-c-col-left-region&amp;WT.nav=opinion-c-col-left-region&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the role of education<\/a>\u00a0in this regard. Perhaps it\u2019s all \u201cof the moment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>One of my great influences speaks to\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/web.stanford.edu\/group\/SHR\/4-2\/text\/foerster.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the distinction between ethics and morality<\/a>\u00a0with direct application to design (this paper a consistent favorite among students).
