{"id":823,"date":"2016-01-18T18:42:18","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T23:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ccsmfa.wordpress.com\/?p=823"},"modified":"2021-01-18T18:59:43","modified_gmt":"2021-01-18T23:59:43","slug":"mit-media-lab-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pangaro.com\/designconversation\/2016\/01\/mit-media-lab-design\/","title":{"rendered":"MIT Media Lab &#038; Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>I believe that by bringing together design and science we can produce a rigorous but flexible approach that will allow us to explore, understand and contribute to science in an antidisciplinary way. \u2014 Joi Ito<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Joi Ito, director of the MIT Media Lab, is starting a new journal\u00a0with MIT Press and MIT Libraries called <em>Design and Science<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pubpub.org\/pub\/designandscience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">His introductory post<\/a>\u00a0takes the stand that science suffers from narrow vocabularies that create silos of thinking and restrict rich collaboration.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nHe then references cybernetics as the original &#8220;antidisciplinary&#8221; discipline, operating in the whitespace created by the established vocabularies. He offers cybernetics as a way forward:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In many ways, the cybernetics movement is a model for what we are trying to do\u2014allowing a convergence of new technologies to create a new movement that cuts across the disciplines.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He is clear why we need cybernetics:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; by bringing the human into the system second-order cybernetics goes beyond the move from \u201cobjectivity\u201d to \u201csubjectivity\u201d and makes the participants responsible for what they pay attention to and what they value.
